Change is the only thing that remains unchanged

Either it is Life or Teaching Life skills... We need to focus on Varied phenomenons for Varied Individuals.
This activity is based on the Lucky Dip game that is famous in Playing cards, wherein the same concept is replicated here in the form of words, which simultaneously teaches the aspect of Opposite words  to the children as well as acts as a form of entertainment.

The game goes on like this:
The cards were distributed to the children and they were asked to drop the cards one by one in a clockwise direction . So, whenever a child drops a card that is opposite to the previous card, that child gets the whole stack of laid down cards. Hence the person with the  maximum cards is the winner of the game.
Subsequently the children were very much provoked to win the game, they were insisting of playing it again and again.

The splendid result is the Understanding of a concept as well as the entertainment of a game.

Our Tribute to Late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,

Selvi J. Jayalalitha

We opened our School today and spoke to the children about the demise of our Late Chief Minister in our Circle time.
We had discussions and had a 5 minutes silence. Suddenly one of the children came up with an idea of making a collage about her.

So, we helped them in gathering few information and thus they have come out with this work.
Glance through the pictures and give us your feedback in your comment.

Do we have space for "them" in schools?

Let us ask ourselves the question........

One day an astrologer came home for counselling. He had a son studying in 9th. The child had problems in school. They would trim his finger nails which he wouldn't do at home. They made him wash his face as soon as he came from home as he would apply a lot of cream on his face and sometimes come with wearing lip sticks.he would remove his hair from his arms and legs. He was considered as a boy with behavioral issues. He would run away from school when they tried to trim his nails.

I guessed there was something "abnormal" with the boy by his looks too. His mannerisms were like a girl.

I referred him to a psychiatrist. He spoke to him and the father. The boy was slowly changing into a transgender.
The father is in denial saying that boys with thiruvadarai nakshathram (star sign) would like to be that way.

The school has warned the parent that the boy had to change his behavior for accommodation. Otherwise he would be sent out.

Is the school aware of these changes,? Will they be accommodating him ? Who is to Bell the cat?

Is there support group for these children?

Please support the cause.

Is your kid emotionally well?

Emotional intelligence of a child is more important than academic intelligence.

This has to be nurtured from young age. Are we teaching the children to take success and failure in the same stride?

I think we should teach them that success and failure need not be taken objectively and should be subjective. Are we teaching them to do things at their pace and according to their capacity or are we teaching them to run a rat race?
Where are we heading to? Teaching the child to have a balance in life is important. This can be done only at home. Giving the child a lot of freedom, respecting their decision making ability, teaching them to be independent from the beginning, and having open discussions with them on anything under the sun, giving opportunities for questioning will help them nurture this intelligence.
They will be able to lead a better life, and take proper decisions. Thus there is no comparison as to who is successful or a failure.

KOLAM - an art

(In pictures below: Kolams drawn by children of D.K.'s)

Kolam is an art followed in south India. They draw kolams in front of the house using rice flour, to be eaten by birds and ants. These days the tradition is slowly deteriorating. This could be due to three reasons: flat system, no time, and last but not the least convertism.

When I was a child we used to see people coming out early in the morning in the cold during the month of December” margazhi” and draw huge kolams inn front of the house. I remember helping my friend’s sister do that we used to gather in large numbers to finish that.

But hardly these are seen in front of houses. Actually kolam drawing is an art. It is maths in itself, there is the concept of symmetry, counting, joining the dots at the exact position. It was an occupational therapy in itself. It encouraged fine motor skills, eye tracking, tolerance and creative thinking. and visual learning.
So let us go beyond religion and culture and encourage this art. This is in no way connected to hinduism or godliness or anything. It has an aesthetic sense.

Our institute encourages children to draw kolams and I was amazed that muslim children took interest in learning it and drew good kolams. They felt it was easy to draw in a sheet of paper but found it difficult in space orientation on the ground. So let us encourage this art and go beyond religion to encourage it.
This I have experienced has helped many dyslexic children become better readers and their hand writing have improved.
So kolams why not!!!!!

International day for people with disabilities: What is our take on this?

The word disability has 'Ability' in it. International day for people with disabilities is observed on 3rd December every year since 1992.

This day marks a great significance in order to emphasize on rights of people with disabilities and their right of living a dignified life. This day is observed to sensitize the society on empathizing, understanding and also to provide assistance that could make them live a dignified life.

At this time of the year it is quite saddening that government policies on disability issues and their implementations are very slow and it hardly reaches people. On the other hand, it is a happy state that there are several self help organisations that have come up in supporting such people by providing medical assistance, education, physical support systems and several job opportunities, not by sympathy but with their qualification.

Throughout the World this day there are several exhibitions, workshops, rallies that are being organised to impart disability issues to the mainstream society emphasizing on inclusion of such people. With 15% of the total population constitute people with disabilities, we can make a step in and do things that are at our reach from helping them cross roads, help them get inside a bus, give them space to sit in public places and so on.

Remember always "DISABILITY IS NATURAL".

But we never must develop an attitude that we are superior to them. Before we think of assisting them, lets educate ourselves.  Read more and know your etiquette's>>>>>>>>>

Children's day: Time for us to be more responsible

'My parents let him tear into me. They sent a doctor to stitch it tight. Then, they sent another person to tear into me.' Said a girl who was rescued from forced prostitution. She was just 12 years old. She was given steroids to make her look elderly so that their business will be more happening. If the quote of this news item surprises you, let me tell you that this is nothing new and the torture our kids face day to day doesn't stop with this.

Initially, they killed girls as infants. The rest who survived this death threat and managed to live a few years were compelled into child marriage. It wasn't a problem just for the girl, was it? Both the girl and the boy were deprived of their innocence, childhood and choice of living. If this took decades for this to diminish, it is taking us forever to eradicate child labour. At least, are these kids healthy enough to labour? No, most of them don't get proper food, even basic hygiene becomes a fantasy for them. They suffer from various deficiencies and health issues. They are also deprived of education which is every child's right. Are the children, who, fortunately, escape labouring, eat decent food and go to school, happy and safe? How can they be happy when people, right from bus driver to their school teacher, abuse them taking advantage of their incapability of understanding what's happening to them. Above all, it is disheartening to read children being raped and traded. This is the pathetic state of children in India. If they say children are the building blocks of the future, they have to be taken care of. If this is the state of children then we can well imagine the way our future is getting shaped.

Let us stand up for our future. Let us take care of the children around.

On this day, let's be sensible and be sensitized towards problems faced by children. Lets give enough empowerment to our children. That would be a real essence of observing Children's day.

Happy Children's day! :)
